The Lathe
The lathe has five important parts:
bed, headstock, tailstock, carriage and feed box.The bed is the foundation member of the lathe. It is rigid in construction. The headstock, the tailstock and the carriage are all on the lathe bed. The feed box is below the headstock.
The rotation of the workpieces is provided by the movement of a series of gears which drive the main spindle. The gears receive their power from an electric motor through multiple V belts. The main spindle and the gears are all mounted in the headstock.
Along workpiece can be held between the headstock and carriage. The tailstock can be clamped at various positious along the bed. Short workpiece are held by the chuck only.
The single-point cutting tool is held in a tool post, which is mounted on the carriage.
