The officer gave Leakey two tickets and calmly explained that if he had to drive to work, a judge would probably allow him a restricted(受限制的)license(执照).
“No,” Leakey shouted. “I am not going to talk to any judge! I am going to settle this with you!”
An hour later, the officer saw Leakey’s car coming. “What dose he want now?” he said to himself.
Leakey drove slowly by the side of the police car. Then a bullet hit the officer’s face.
Leakey ran away. The officer was unable to see. His voice was gone. His tongue had been torn into small pieces. Touching his face, he discovered that he had no upper jaw, no nose, no cheek-bones. He managed to get out of the car, but sank to the ground.
He thought of his grandmother, seriously wounded while saving two other soldiers. She received a medal for bravery.
He recognized the voice of Detective Dole. “Can you hear me?” Dole asked, taking the officer’s hand gently. “Squeeze (挤眼)once for yes and twice for no.” The officer squeezed once.
Through some questions, the detective learned important facts---the gunman was a black man. The officer couldn’t remember the gunman’s name, but the license plate number was fixed in his mind. He signed for paper and pen and wrote--- “6800 BAB.” On his way to the hospital, a detective told him that Leakey had been caught.
The pain was very great. With no upper jaw or teeth, he could eat only soft foods.
Leakey was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
The officer received his gold sergeant’s badge(徽章)in 1993.
