He needs to be told the truth.= The truth needs to be told to him.（他需要被告知真相。）

真的无语，许多人甚至高手解英语题像解数学题和物理题一样套用公式，我就纳了闷了，如果 He needs to be told the truth.这句话是错误的，那么，I want to be told the news 。这句话又怎样呢？“sth + need/ want/require + doing/ to be done”这个句型地球人都知道，但它的主语是事物呀！
回答楼主的补充问题：
We need to tell him the truth = The truth needs to be told to him （by us）=He needs to be told the truth （by us）。tell 接双宾语，第二句话将直接宾语truth作为被动语态句子的主语；第三句话将间接宾语 him 作为被动语态的主语。您可以把 need to 整个看成一个助动词。
