1.语气强弱不同：

beautiful 漂亮悦人的，表示 美丽 的最普通用词，语气最强，不用于男性。它所表示的“美丽”包括美学上所讲的美。

pretty 美丽可爱的，多用于小孩、妇女和较细小的东西，语气较弱。

pretty只表示beautiful的一部分。a pretty child(girl,little house)。

2.赞美程度不同：

pretty和beautiful在汉语的意思上没有太大的分别。但是在英语里有不同，后者的程度比较深。

见了人会夸pretty，但是很少用beautiful。除非是那种巨美的。

pretty在某种程度上来说，没有beatuiful好看，一般外国人不太用beautiful来形容人的，一般只会说 pretty girl。 

如你见到一个女孩子，你不认识她。你可以说“oh my god she's so pretty”。但是你最好不要说"she is beautiful"因为beautiful大多是指内在的美。

3.用法不同：

beautiful只能做形容词，修饰名词，做定语。而pretty除此种用法外，还能做副词 = very， 如That’s a pretty good ideal。
