The Eskimos look like Chinese. Their hair is black and straight. Their skin is yellow. They live in

food comes from there. They do not grow things. The weather is too cold. They eat fish and meat.
Sometimes the food is boiled. Often it is not cooked at all. The men look for food. The women watch
the children, make clothes and cook. Their houses are very interesting. In winter they live in houses
of earth and stones with earthern roofs, or make houses of snow. Their snow houses are round and low.
You can stand up only in the middle of the house. Their window is made of ice. The Eskimos can build
this kind of house very quickly. When they travel, they often make a new house every night. A house
like this is not cold. There is a lamp inside the house to keep it warm. The snow does not become water,
because it is very cold outside. The bed and table are also made of snow. The door of the snow house is
very small. The warm air inside cannot get out easily and the cold air cannot come in. The lamp is
important. It does three things. It warms the house,it gives light and it cooks the food. Inside the house
the Eskimos still wear warm clothes. The clothes are thick and warm.
Before the Eskimos met the white men, their knives and other things were made of stone or parts of
animals. Now they use guns and knives. In order to catch animals, they travel a lot. They are
helped by dogs. The Eskimos also use boats, light boats which can move vary fast through the
water. Small boats are used to catch animals and fish. Bigger boats are used when the family travels.
Most Eskimos do not live in big villages. Often only a few families live together. They look for
Food together. They do not fight witheach other and do not steal. They do not hit their children at
all. The boys grow up quickly and go with their fathers and look for food. The girl stay at home
and help their mothers.
Some Eskimos live in big villages or near big towns. Because of this, their way of life is
different from that of the other Eskimos. They can read and write. In Greenland some of the
newspapers and booksare in the Eskimo language, which used almost thesame writing as the
English language. The Eskimo language is not easy to learn. It uses very long words.These words
have many parts. About fifty thousand people speak the Eskimolanguage. The language of all
the Eskimos are almost the same.
