Dear RLS,
I am very glad you wrote to me to ask about the two universities in China that provide courses in conference interpretation.
The Shanghai school has been recognized by the AIIC Training Committee as a Category 1 school and has official cooperation with the UN. It has six AIIC members on faculty (full- and part-time) and its diploma is officially recognized by the United Nations and the European Commission. It also takes in few students, so there is strong competition between the candidates to get in.
The Beijing school accepts more students, but it has no screening or graduation exams. I would say if you wish to work as a conference interpreter, it is better to have a diploma that is recognized internationally.
I wish you luck in your efforts, and I hope you succeed in joining our ranks.
Kind regards,
Salma Tejpar-Dang
