高中英语语法填空

Question

1.He______(pretend) that a tiger toy was real and giving it a voice.
2.After a four-day journey,the young man______(present) the water to the old man.
第一题的答案是：was pretending 第二题是：presented
这两题在不同的文章中，做第一题时，我当时雨填的是pretended，错了
后来做第二题时，受第一题的影响，我填了was presenting，当然，也错了。
我现在就是有点糊涂了，有是看到括号中的动词时，知道整篇文章用的是过去时态，但我却不知道到底是用was+v.ing 还是 v+ed，现在都乱了。
以上两题分别来处11年和10年的广东语法填空题。
希望有哪位高人指点一下，其实我现在想找出的不仅仅是这两题的方法，各重要的是我自己到底缺什么知识，发现自己的英语很不扎实啊，各位帮忙，不胜感激！

答：第一题，在看到and giving it a voice之前，我想的也是一般过去时态！因为一般过去时表示过去发生过的一件事情。这里没有often之类的副词，不宜用一般现在时。
但看到了and giving之后，感觉句子有问题了！你一讲答案，晃然大悟！对，只有：He was doing A and doing B. 才通。
当然，如果没有and,则用pretended更好：He did A, doing B.
这一题，如果是作为单选题，确实很巧妙！但限定不够，用is pretending也可以。如果是有上下文的语法填空题从前文可以看出用过去进行时最佳，不一定需要and giving这个信息。
第二句，有after...这个时间状语，是过去发生过的一件事，并没有表示某个时刻的状语，所以用一般过去时较好。表示：在。。。之后，他做了一件事情。

他在做XXXandXXX。and连接的两个是对等的，后面是过去进行时，是在描述一个持续时段内持续发生的事。前面的是与该过去进行时行为同时发生的行为，也是一段时间内的持续性行为，所以何用过去进行时。
2.After a four-day journey,the young man XXX the water to the old man。.经过4的旅途之后，那个年轻人给老人端了杯水。端水是很短的时间，尤其相对4天而言，对于一个时间点，不用进行时，用过去时态，也就是did sth.
