一、before的基本用法
1.We plan to finish the adjustment of the equipment before Sunday.我们计划在星期日以前完成设备的调试工作。
2.These devices are usually tested before installation.这些装置通常在安装前进行试验。
3.The workers were discussing the problems before the fire.（当时）工人们正在炉前讨论问题。
4.The problem came before the Committee.该问题提到委员会上来了。（原文直译是：该问题摆在委员会面前了。）
Ⅱ.before作连接词用，引出一时间从句，表示时间“在……以前”之意：
1.The direction of an electric current was decided before electrons were discovered.电流方向是在发现电子前就确定了的。
2.We shall discuss the problem fully before we make the decision.在我们作出决定以前，我们将把这个问题充分讨论。
注：由before引导的时间从句不用将来时态。上句谓语真实时间取决于主句的谓语时间，即“作出决定”显然是在“讨论”之后，故是将来时间。
3.We had read the operation instructions before we began to test machine.开始试验该机器以前，我们已看了操作说明书。
上句中主句用过去完成时是因为它的谓语动作是在时间状语从句内过去时谓语began所表示的动作之前发生的，构成了“过去的过去”，故用过去完成时。但考虑到before本身词义已把主句和从句的谓语动词动作先后分清了，有时可以用过去时代替过去完成时。例如：
4.I left before he arrived.他还没有到达，我就离开了。
Ⅲ.由before引出一种特殊的“定语从句”：
1.It happened in the year before the city was liberated.这是在这一城市解放前一年发生的。
2.They did not reach Tianjin until May 2, the day before the meeting was to be held.他们到5月2日，也即会议召开前一天到达天津。
Ⅳ.before的转用法：在本情况下主句、从句各有情态动词must，can等。翻译时将原文主句译成条件从句，前加“只有”，而从句译成主句。例如：
1.We must study hard before we can effectively serve the people.只有（我们）努力学习，我们才能有效地为人民服务。
2.A great effort must still be made before the ideals can be turned into reality.只有经过巨大努力，理想才能变为现实。
Ⅴ.before作副词用，表示时间上的“以前”、“从前”之意，与其搭配的动词或动作的相应形式（见例句3）多半完成式：
1.He has heard this before.他从前听说过这件事。
2.We have never studied English before.我们过去从未学过英语。
3.I remember having seen such a device before.我记得以前看到过这样一种装置。
4.I never met him before.（若用现在完成时也可）我从未见过他。
二、几个意义上不要混淆的问题
Ⅰ.before和ago用法差异
before和ago译成汉语，都是“以前”，但含义差别不大。
ago用于从当前说话或写文章时刻算起的若干时间“以前”，动词用过去时。例如：
They began the experiment two days ago.两天前他们开始做这个实验。（指说这句话时的两天前。）
before用于从过去某时刻算起的若干时间“以前”，动词一般用过去完成式。例如：
At that time he said that he had agreed to this proposal two days before.那时他说，他两天前就赞同这个建议。（以“那时”为基准，指“那时”的两天前，当然不可能是听到这句话时的两天前了。）
Ⅱ.before long 和long before含义不同：
before long作“不久以后”讲，切不要按字面译为“长时间以前”或“好久以前”。
1.We hope to finish our experiment before long.我们希望不久（以后）就把实验做完。
2.Before long, his work began to show results.不久他的工作开始见效。
long before作“很久以前”讲。原意为“……以前很久”，故也可译为“早就”。long before不同，前者在其后面可以接名词或一个从句；当上下文明确时，名词或从句还可以省略。before long则没有上述搭配用法。例如：
1.Maxism was widespread in China long before (the)liberation.解放前，马克思主义早就在中国广泛传播了。
2.We(had)heard about this new-type machine long before we saw it.这台新型机器我们在见到它以前，早就听说了。
3.We see a train approaching long before we hear its sound.在听到火车声以前，我们早就看见火车行驶过来。
4.It will not be long we finish the experiment.我们不久就可以完成那个实验。（原意为：在我们完成那个实验以前，时间不会很长了。）
5.It was long before he came.他过了很久以后才来。（注意本句的引申译法。）
6.We began the test yesterday, but we had made preparations long before.（句末结合上文省略了that或we began the test.）我们昨天开始作实验，但我们在那以前很久就已经作准备了。
