until banks came into existence, merchants deposited their valuables with goldsmiths who issued them with receipts for the goods which had been left in their care. the holder of the receipt was entitled to withdraw the articles on presentation of the receipt. but often the merchants' deposits were lent out at interest. the goldsmith naturally kept a sufficient reserve to meet demands for repayment. it was unlikely that all his clients would demand repayment at the same time. people also borrowed money from goldsmiths and after a while, the goldsmiths conceived the idea of giving borrowers notes in which they promised to pay the sum required on demand. in other words, they began to issue banknotes and the money which they received remained undisturbed in their strong rooms. slowly these practices developed into banking as we know it today and the goldsmith and money lender became banker.
