特别是其中一只“牛头兽”，制作的精细绝对是前所未见，演员穿上的特制肢体，除了仿造肌肉外，还植入以水袋仿制的脂肪，甚至加上以胶管仿造的血管，令演员胸部手臂的肌肉活动自如，更具真实质感。而电子遥控的“牛头”，由眼睛、耳朵以至嘴唇下巴均可独立活动。

影片中有个数十万生物参加的宏大战争场面是导演安德鲁·亚当森自己想出来的，原著只用了一页半的篇幅轻描淡写。战争场景在新西兰的羊群山拍摄，数百名群众演员身穿奇异的服饰，表演这场“举世无双”的战争。

然后特技人员使用曾为《指环王》制作出战争场景的软件，把战斗者变成数十万之众并且分别控制每一个角色的动作。特技工作人员在银幕上制作出二三十种生物，每一种都有自己的特点，跳跃、跑动、走路、移动和打斗的姿势都不同。
