我觉得这几个字应该和之前的 such another exercise of wit 连在一起看，使它们组成一个 such XXX as was his 的结构，意思是 "犹如 XXX 这东西就是他的一样"。当中的 XXX 便是 another exercise of wit（另一次卖弄聪明）。

所以，such another exercise of wit as was his 的意思，便是 "犹如 '另一次卖弄聪明' 这东西就是他的一样"。再调整一下，把重复的部份去掉，让它通顺点，便变成："就像他又一次卖弄聪明一样"。
